Oklahoma college basketball player dies following in-game injury in Texas

Ethan Dietz, a sophomore basketball player at Connors State College in Oklahoma, has died following an injury sustained during a game in Texas, the school announced.

Dietz was injured in the second half of a Saturday game against Grayson College and passed away on Tuesday, according to a statement posted on the college’s Facebook page. College spokesperson Shannon Rigsby said initial reports suggest Dietz suffered a head injury, though further details were not available.

“Ethan exemplified what it means to be a Cowboy, to value hard work and being part of a team,” the statement read. “While the team and the Cowboy community are processing our own grief, our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

In his final game, Dietz scored six points and recorded four rebounds. The 6-foot-8 forward from Vilonia, Arkansas, had been averaging 11 points per game this season.

Following his death, several men’s and women’s basketball games were canceled, and the school said counseling would be offered to students, faculty, and staff.

The college emphasized Dietz’s impact on the community, stating, “Ethan's loss reminds us all how precious life is and how much those around us impact our lives. As we move through this loss together as a community, let's be inspired by Ethan's spirit, friendship, and love.”

A vigil honoring Dietz is scheduled for Dec. 1 on the Connors State College campus in Warner, Oklahoma.
