 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Trump rescinds South Africa’s invitation to 2026 G20 summit

President Donald Trump has withdrawn South Africa’s invitation to next year’s G20 summit in Miami, intensifying tensions between Washington and Johannesburg. The announcement came on Wednesday on Trump’s Truth Social platform as the current G20 summit in South Africa concluded without U.S. participation. Trump said in his statement that South Africa “has demonstrated to the world they are not a country worthy of membership anywhere” and that all U.S. payments and subsidies to the country would be halted immediately.

Trump’s criticisms of South Africa have escalated since he returned to the White House. In February, he threatened to cut U.S. funding over a new South African law allowing land expropriation in certain cases to address inequalities stemming from apartheid. Trump claimed the law enabled the “confiscation” of land in violation of White South Africans’ human rights. He has also alleged that White South Africans are facing genocide, a claim rejected by South African officials, regional leaders, and independent observers.

The African National Congress, the ruling party of President Cyril Ramaphosa, condemned Trump’s statements as part of “a long and disgraceful pattern of imperial arrogance and disinformation.” The party said the remarks were deliberate attempts to distort South Africa’s democracy and to exploit racial fear for political gain in the U.S. It cited Trump’s previous record of supporting right-wing movements globally and his controversial rhetoric on racial issues as evidence of prejudice driving his actions.

Trump reiterated his allegations on Tuesday, claiming that Afrikaners were being killed and their land seized, and accused South Africa of refusing to hand over the G20 presidency to a senior U.S. Embassy official at the summit’s conclusion. South Africa’s government responded that the U.S. did not attend the summit and that the G20 presidency instruments were officially handed over to a U.S. Embassy official at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

President Ramaphosa’s office stated that South Africa would continue to participate fully in the G20 as a founding member. It also expressed regret that despite repeated efforts to reset diplomatic relations, Trump continued to impose punitive measures based on misinformation and distortions about the country.
