Wicked Witch hat from Wizard of Oz set for December auction
The iconic Wicked Witch hat worn by Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz will be auctioned at the Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction on Dec. 9 and 10.
The black wool bunting hat stands roughly 14 inches tall, measures 19 inches across, and includes a 22-inch chinstrap. It is considered one of the most recognizable pieces of Hollywood history, symbolizing not only one of cinema’s most famous villains but also the creativity and craftsmanship that made The Wizard of Oz a cinematic milestone, according to Heritage Auctions executive vice president Joe Maddalena.
The auction follows last year’s high-profile sale of Judy Garland’s ruby slippers, which fetched nearly $2 million. Other items up for bid include a Wizard of Oz book signed by cast members and one of Garland’s rehearsal slippers. The Wicked Witch hat will start with a $100,000 bid.
Meanwhile, interest in the character continues with the release of Wicked: For Good, opening Nov. 21, in which Cynthia Erivo portrays Elphaba, the young woman who eventually becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. The film builds on the story introduced in Wicked, adapted from Gregory Maguire’s novel, exploring the witch’s origin and her connection to Glinda the Good.
