AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro undergoes double hernia surgery

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro underwent double hernia surgery on Thursday at a hospital in Brasilia, with doctors saying the procedure lasted about three and a half hours and was completed without complications. Medical staff at DF Star Hospital said Bolsonaro will remain under postoperative care, including pain management, physical therapy, and measures to prevent blood clots. He has been hospitalized since Wednesday and was allowed to leave prison temporarily after federal police doctors determined the surgery was medically necessary. Bolsonaro has complained of ongoing pain from the condition and has undergone multiple surgeries in recent years stemming from a 2018 stabbing attack during a campaign rally.

Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence following his conviction for attempting to overthrow Brazil’s democratic system after his 2022 election defeat. Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized the surgery but rejected Bolsonaro’s request for house arrest once he is discharged. Bolsonaro is held at federal police headquarters in Brasilia, where authorities say he is kept isolated from other inmates in a small room equipped with basic amenities. He is permitted unrestricted access to doctors and lawyers, while other visitors require Supreme Court approval. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, is accompanying him in the hospital, and his sons were authorized to visit. Ahead of the surgery, Bolsonaro’s eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, said his father had formally endorsed him as the Liberal Party’s presidential candidate for next year’s election. Bolsonaro and several allies were convicted of charges that included leading an armed criminal organization and attempting to violently abolish the rule of law, with the court finding the plot involved plans targeting President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice de Moraes. Bolsonaro has denied all wrongdoing.
