AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. In a view to strengthen coordination and preparedness for the upcoming public health activities across communities and Local Government Areas (LGAs) for the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign, the State Ministry of Health (SMOH) in collaboration with implementing Partners has inaugurated the Primary Healthcare Service Champions.

This was the crux of the events which took place at a one-day training/workshop held at the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Hall of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku Awka.

The workshop provided practical guidance, and equiped key Community Leaders with updated information on the MR campaign. It also enhanced coordination to strengthen community mobilization efforts for increased coverage of the vaccination programme.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike in his usual spur to drum home the salient points of the exercise encouraged Community Leaders that prospective, capable and well known community members be allowed to participate in the exercise.

He explained that by so doing, community members would be encouraged whilst trusting that the exercise is safe, friendly and effective.

``Our core mandate is the selection of qualified team that will participate at the Measles Rubella campaign which is set to commence from February 4 to 13, 2026, and to secure steering committee for  maximum workability of the campaign."

The State Immunization Officer, Mrs. Edith Onwuka while elaborating on the Measles scourge commended the State for living up to expectations in the past three years which had helped to keep the scourge out of the state from 2022 to present day.

According to her, the Measles Rubella Vaccination which its campaign and preparations are on top gear in Anambra State, have not  had any outbreak from 2022 to date. ``This is because we are up fit with the vaccines and we have to continue with the good works.

``The upcoming campaign is called mother of all campaigns because this is the first time we are engaging in Measles-Rubella and afterwards we will engage in MOPs," She added.

The Health Supervisor, Idemili North Local Government, Dr. Nkem Okeke in his vote of thanks at the event assured that the messages would be effectively cascaded to the people at the grassroots.

``Despite the workshop's short notice, we assure that we will give our best in disseminating the messages so far shared at this event as we at the grassroots are ready to work to make sure that our people are deeply involved."

The event had in attendance: Traditional Rulers, Supervisory Councillors for Health, Youth Leaders, Representatives of the Paediatric Association of Nigeria and Line Ministries of Education, Information, ASUBEB, others.
