AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Iraq parliament elects Halbousi as speaker in first session since election

Iraq’s parliament elected Sunni lawmaker Haibat al-Halbousi as speaker during its opening session on Monday following the country’s November national election, beginning the often-lengthy process of forming a new government. Halbousi received 208 out of 283 votes, according to a parliamentary statement. As speaker, he is responsible for maintaining legislative order, mediating disputes, and fostering consensus within Iraq’s sectarian and often fragmented political system.

Under the Iraqi constitution, the parliament must elect a speaker and two deputies at the opening session, then select a new president within 30 days. The president will assign the largest parliamentary bloc the task of forming a government. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s bloc won the most seats in the election, and the next administration will need to navigate complex pressures from both U.S. and Iranian influence, alongside the presence of numerous Iran-aligned militia groups.
