NAF SAFETY REVIEW BOARD SETS STRATEGIC DIRECTION TO DEEPEN PROACTIVE, SYSTEMS-BASED OPERATIONAL SAFETY

The Nigerian Air Force has reinforced its commitment to operational excellence and force protection with the successful conduct of the Second Safety Review Board (SRB) Meeting for the Year 2025, held on 23 December 2025 at the Air Marshal MD Umar Blue Room. As the Service’s highest decision-making body on safety matters, the SRB provides a strategic forum for reviewing air and ground incidents, analysing trends, and setting policy direction to strengthen the Safety Management System across all operational domains.

Opening the meeting, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the Board as “a key pillar of our safety governance structure,” underscoring that safety is fundamental to mission readiness, operational effectiveness, and personnel welfare. He noted that, upon assumption of office, he constituted a committee of serving and retired senior officers to objectively appraise major operational, engineering, and armament formations, with a mandate to identify and mitigate risks before they translate into incidents. In line with a systems-based approach, the meeting’s scope was expanded to include members of the appraisal committee and other senior and retired officers to enrich deliberations and deliver sustainable safety solutions.

The CAS also highlighted milestones recorded by the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Safety, Ipetu-Ijesha, particularly in safety capacity building, including multiple flight and ground safety courses conducted in 2025 and growing regional interest, with foreign armed forces indicating intent to train at the Institute. He disclosed that a committee has been set up to develop modalities for the Institute’s accreditation, and charged commanders and safety professionals to sustain performance-based safety management as new platforms are inducted and infrastructure upgraded, reaffirming that safety excellence remains inseparable from operational success.
