More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added.  SAFER LAGOS: LASG REITERATES COMMITMENT TO STRATEGIC COLLABORATION WITH NIGERIAN NAVY

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to strategic collaboration with the Nigerian Navy in strengthening maritime security and ensuring a safer Lagos for residents, businesses and visitors.

Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu made this known at the Nigerian Navy’s 2025 Ceremonial Sunset and Awards Dinner, where he paid glowing tribute to the men and women of the Navy for their dedication, professionalism and sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime frontiers.

The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin noted that "The partnership between Lagos State and the Nigerian Navy is critical to the protection of the state’s vast coastline, inland waterways and thriving blue economy." He added that effective maritime security remains fundamental to Lagos’ economic growth, investor confidence and overall public safety.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Nigerian Navy for its sustained efforts in combating maritime crimes, illegal activities on the waterways and other security threats, stressing that Lagos State will continue to support initiatives that enhance operational capacity, intelligence sharing and inter-agency cooperation.

He assured the Navy of the State Government’s readiness to deepen collaboration through sustained engagement, logistical support and policy alignment aimed at promoting peace, security and prosperity across Lagos’ maritime domain.

While congratulating officers and ratings honoured at the ceremony, the Governor urged them to remain steadfast in upholding the core values of integrity, discipline and patriotism, adding that their service continues to inspire confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture.

Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded by reiterating that a secure maritime environment is indispensable to Lagos’ vision of a resilient, globally competitive megacity, pledging that the State will remain a dependable partner to the Nigerian Navy in achieving this shared goal.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, said the ceremonial Sunset has been adopted worldwide as a maritime legacy that dates back to the 17th century, as originated by the British Royal Navy.

The highlight of the event included a parade, the lowering of the national flag to mark the end of the official duties and to honour the fallen sailors. There was also a presentation of pins and certificates to the Nigerian Navy Icons. Governor Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel were also appreciated for their support to the Nigerian Navy.
