SEN. EMMANUEL NWACHUKWU PUSHES FOR RESTORATION OF ELECTRICITY IN ANAMBRA SOUTH. (PHOTO).

Senator Emmanuel Nwachukwu pushes for  restoration of Electricity  in Anambra South

Senator Emmanuel C. Nwachukwu, representing Anambra South Senatorial District, has stepped up his drive to end the prolonged electricity hardship affecting Nnewi, Ihiala, Umuchu and surrounding communities.

He said his recent engagements with federal agencies, community leaders and technical stakeholders have placed the region “on a clear path toward stable and lasting electricity supply.”

In a statement issued after weeks of targeted interventions, Senator Nwachukwu described stable electricity as “a fundamental driver of development,” reiterating his unwavering commitment to securing a permanent solution for residents of the zone.

The Senator recently held a strategic meeting with Engr. Donatus Ifeanyi Okonkwo, Assistant General Manager of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Onitsha Sub-Region. During the meeting, Engr. Okonkwo gave a comprehensive technical update on the delayed Nnewi Injection Substation.

He explained that the major obstacle to completing the project remains the Right of Way (ROW) obstruction in Nnobi, alongside unresolved compensation issues for individuals whose properties fall within the transmission corridor.

Engr. Okonkwo also briefed the lawmaker on the status of related electricity projects, noting that the Nnewi substation “is the closest to completion and, once energized, will immediately supply power to parts of Ihiala.”

On the blackout resulting from failed equipment, TCN assured the Senator that repairs “are ongoing and will be completed as swiftly as possible.”

Earlier in the week, Senator Nwachukwu and his technical advisers met with Engr. E. Ajiboye, Executive Director of the Transmission Service Provider (TSP), alongside senior Ministry of Power officials in Abuja.

Describing the meeting as “highly productive,” the Senator disclosed that federal authorities confirmed the remobilisation of the contractor handling the Nnewi project. He said officials also assured him that all required equipment and technical resources were being deployed to accelerate the work.

According to him, the Ministry has placed priority on completing the Nnewi substation due to its advanced stage and its capacity to bring immediate relief to the region.

“They reaffirmed that the Ihiala and Umuchu projects will continue seamlessly once Nnewi is fully energized,” he said.

Following the Abuja meetings, Senator Nwachukwu visited His Royal Majesty, Igwe (Engr.) Nick Obi, Igwe Omenyili of Nnobi, on 30 November 2025, to address the lingering Right of Way issues hindering the project.

He described the engagement as “very fruitful,” noting that the Igwe identified those likely to be affected by the required ROW clearance and expressed full royal backing for the completion of the project.

The monarch, he said, pledged the cooperation of the entire Nnobi community to ensure unhindered progress.

A broader stakeholders’ meeting involving representatives from Nnewi, Nnobi and relevant agencies will be convened to finalise the ROW process and remove the last barriers delaying the project.

Reaffirming his determination to deliver improved electricity infrastructure to Anambra South, Senator Nwachukwu declared: “Together, we will achieve this maka oganiru Anambra South.
