Cause of death revealed for Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner

The Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the cause of death for director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. Both died from “multiple sharp force injuries,” with the official date of death listed as Sunday, Dec. 14.

The announcement comes as their son, Nick Reiner, 32, appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of his parents. Nick Reiner did not enter a plea during the hearing, appearing behind a glass wall in a custody area, shackled and wearing a blue suicide-prevention smock. At his lawyer’s request, his arraignment was postponed to Jan. 7, 2026, which he acknowledged by saying “yes, your honor.”

Authorities reported that Rob and Michele Reiner were killed in the early morning hours of Dec. 14 and discovered later that afternoon in their Brentwood, Los Angeles, home with apparent stab wounds.

Their children, Jake and Romy Reiner, issued a statement through a family spokesperson expressing their grief. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they said. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

The siblings added they are “grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” and requested privacy. “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
