2 BENUE WOMEN ARRESTED, BAILED IN EDO OVER ALLEGED DRUG USE, PUBLIC DISTURBANCE

9th January, 2026

Two women said to be from Benue State have been arrested and subsequently granted bail by the Edo State Police Command following complaints of alleged drug use and persistent disturbance at a hotel in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area.

It was gathered that residents living around the hotel alerted the police after several days of loud activities reportedly emanating from the premises. The disturbance, according to sources, involved excessive noise, suspected drug consumption and activities that disrupted public peace.

Confirming the incident, a senior police officer at the Uromi Police Division said the women were taken in for questioning after neighbours raised concerns. He noted that the matter centred on public nuisance and suspected drug-related activities, adding that the suspects were later released on bail.

The incident comes amid renewed efforts by the Edo State Government to curb prostitution, drug abuse and other social vices across the state.

Officials collaborating with the Office of the Special Adviser on Human Trafficking and Child Labour also expressed concern over the development, noting that such incidents contribute to negative perceptions about the states of origin of those involved.

Further information indicated that one of the women is reportedly from Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State and is said to have left behind a young child before travelling. Another was alleged to have been away from home for several years without contact with her family.

Police authorities stressed that investigations were ongoing and urged members of the public to channel complaints through lawful means, while cautioning against stigma and mob actions.
