 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. Actor Kiefer Sutherland arrested over alleged altercation with ride-share driver

Actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested early Monday in Los Angeles following an alleged altercation with a ride-hail driver, authorities confirmed. The 59-year-old Emmy winner was taken into custody just after midnight near Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, south of the Hollywood Hills.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Sutherland reportedly entered the ride-hail vehicle, physically assaulted the driver, and made criminal threats. He was booked on suspicion of felony criminal threats and later released on a $50,000 bond. No injuries requiring medical attention were reported. His first court appearance is set for Feb. 2.
Sutherland is best known for his role as Jack Bauer on the TV series 24 and has appeared in films including Melancholia, Tinsel Town, The Lost Boys, and Young Guns. He also starred in Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me and A Few Good Men. He is the son of the late actor Donald Sutherland, who passed away in June 2024.

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity. Speaking at a meeting with a delegation of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, at his Lagos residence, on Friday, Dec. 26, Tinubu revealed that the Federal Government had ordered four attack helicopters from the U.S, adding that they will arrive in the country “soon”. He said: “Our orders for four attack helicopters from the United States of America will take some time to arrive.
