 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  African Union Praises Uganda's Elections


The African Union Commission has commended the conduct of Uganda's recent presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Musevenic on his re-election, amid ongoing efforts to strengthen democracy across the continent.


In a statement released the Chairperson of the African Union,  Mahmoud Ali Youssouf hailed the polls held on January 15, 2026, as a positive step forward. 


Museveni secured a commanding 71.61% of the votes, extending his long tenure as Uganda's leader


Youssouf also expressed "sincere appreciation" to Goodluck Jonathan, the former president of Nigeria, for his "sterling leadership" of the joint election observation mission organized by the African Union, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).


The AU chairperson reiterated the commission's commitment to supporting democracy and effective governance in Africa. 


He applauded the Ugandan people for their dedication to "consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development."
