AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Anambra ADC chairman confirms massive influx into party since Peter Obi’s entry

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Anambra State, Mr Patrick Obianyo, has confirmed that since the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, joined the party on December 31, there has been a huge influx of persons into the party

Obianyo disclosed this on Saturday during a political event organised by the party to receive Hon. Barr. Lawrence Ezeudu, a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, alongside over 200 of his supporters.

Speaking at the event, which was held at the home of the decamping politician, who was also the Chief Whip of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Obianyo said party officials have not had any rest.

"There have been requests in our offices every day for us to visit and receive politicians into our party since Mr Peter Obi joined us. We are here today in Ifitedunu, in Dunukofia Local Government Area, to receive Hon. Barr. Lawrence Ezeudu. Tomorrow we will be in another location, and it has continued like that for over a month now'

“We are urging new members to go to their wards and register. It is true that there is online registration, but we encourage our members to go to their wards where they will be physically captured and recognised as members"

The defection event was attended by many top members of the ADC, including the party’s deputy governorship candidate in last year’s election, Dr Ndubuisi Nwobu, as well as chieftains of the party such as Prof. Chinyere Okunna, Dr Chris Asoukwu, and others.
