Archbishop Okeke commissions N200m multipurpose hall and staff office built by old boys Association of a school in Anambra.

Catholic Bishop of Onitsha Diocese, Archbishop Valerian Okeke, yesterday, commissioned a multimillion naira multi-purpose hall in Archbishop Heerey Technical College, Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The multi-purpose edifice, a storey building funded and built by the old boys association of the school, also accommodates staff offices.

Archbishop Okeke, while commissioning the project, commended the old boys for giving back to the school that moulded them many years ago, saying that the Catholic Church and the school management was appreciative of it.

President of the association, Dr. Okechukwu Okafor, said the association had executed so many projects in the school before now.

“The fencing of the school premises, roofing dilapidated classrooms and laboratory, installation of burglary proofs in the Principal’s and Bursar’s offices due to incessant burglary by thieves, employment and salary payment of two security personnel.

“We’ve also executed several Annual Prize Giving Days and Awards to the best performing students in different subjects, sports, neatness and character in addition to best teachers in different subjects.

“We also awarded University scholarships to the best overall students for successive years of graduation,” Okafor said.

Chairman of the Building Project Implementation Technical Committee, Chief Chris Onwudiwe and National Vice-Chairman of the association, Chief Nwabueze Onuigbo, in their separate speeches explained that a lot of work went into this project.

The project was conceived in 2020 and it cost the association over N200 million from start to finish.

Onwudiwe revealed that the school was established by the Catholic Church before the civil war but was taken over by the government after the war ended.

“You know that this school is a catholic school. The Catholic Church started it before the war and after the war, the government took it. Before the war it was Archbishop Heerey Memorial. Then after the war the government acquired it and named it Boys Secondary School, Ogidi

“That time, a lot of us were Anglicans even though I’m a catholic. But there were a lot of Anglican students from Ogidi that were in the school then. There were also people from Nsukka, Ebonyi, Yoruba land and others that were in the school then. And they’re still in this association.

“But after Peter Obi handed over the school to churches, the Catholic Church recovered it and changed the name to Archbishop Heerey Technical College, Ogidi,” he said.
