 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. Awka South Mayor Joins Aguleri Monarch To Celebrate 165th Ofala, Congratulates APGA National Chairman On Chieftaincy Honour.


The Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Edu Okafor, has extended warm goodwill messages to the traditional ruler of Aguleri, HRM Igwe Dr. Michael C. Idigo (Eze Idigo V), as the revered monarch marked this year’s Ofala Festival. 


The Mayor described the celebration as a profound symbol of Aguleri’s rich heritage, unity, and enduring leadership, commending the Igwe’s wisdom, stability, and commitment to the cultural values that continue to inspire the people.


Prince Okafor praised Igwe Idigo for his decades of purposeful reign, noting that his leadership has strengthened peace, progress, and cultural pride across Aguleri and beyond. 


He emphasized that the Ofala Festival remains a unifying platform that reinforces identity, tradition, and community cohesion, while projecting Aguleri’s cultural significance on the national stage.


In the same vein, the Awka South Mayor congratulated the APGA National Chairman, Barr. Sly Ezeokenwa Jnr, on his chieftaincy conferment as Otulugo Aguleri, describing the honor as well-deserved recognition of his service, leadership, and contributions to society.


Prince Okafor further expressed confidence that the conferment would further inspire Barr. Ezeokenwa to continue promoting unity, good governance, and development in Anambra State and Nigeria at large.
