First University Graduate in Igbo-Ukwu Dies At Age Of 102

The first degree holder from Igbo-Ukwu community and the second from old Aguata, Ide Justus Nkachukwudebelu Ezeife, has passed on at the age of 102, with many who came to pay their last respects at his country home, Ihuakaba, Ezihu Village, Igbo-Ukwu, Aguata Local Government Area, describing him as an honest and foremost educationist who was also a disciplinarian to the core.

Speaking during the funeral ceremony, one of the deceased’s sons, Mr. Uche Ezeife, described his father as a man of his word who was never compromised, always spoke the truth, and was a strict disciplinarian from whom he learnt many life lessons, noting that his jovial nature was endearing.

The eldest daughter, Dr. Obiageli Nwobi, also emphasized that her father was an honest man who never joked with his integrity, a kind, generous, and humorous person who, as the first graduate of Igbo-Ukwu and the second in old Aguata, encouraged many of his peers in those days to acquire higher education, contributed to community development and leadership, and ensured that she and many others under his care attained university education.

Another daughter, Mrs. Nkiruka Nnamdi, explained that being God-fearing, disciplined, family-oriented, and a passionate advocate for education were the defining qualities her father exhibited, noting that despite his long life, he would still be deeply missed.

Condolence visitors at the funeral ceremony, including a community member, Engineer Emeka Okafor, and an ex-student of the deceased, Chief Christian Okoli, remarked that the late Ide Ezeife was an enigma with vast knowledge of history, a firm belief in the value of education, a truthful disposition, and exemplary community leadership, noting that God blessed him with long life, and urged his children and others to emulate his life and sustain his legacies.

Late Ide Ezeife, who lost his wife two decades ago, graduated from University College, Ibadan, in 1953 with a Bachelor’s degree in English, Latin, and History, taught in various schools across the South-East, and retired as a principal, as people from far and wide came to pay their last respects and commiserate with the family.
