Trump warns US may withdraw aid to Iraq if former leader regains power President Trump on Tuesday warned that the United States would “no longer help Iraq” if Nuri Kamal al-Maliki returned as the country’s prime minister, marking another direct intervention in Iraq’s political affairs amid ongoing U.S. efforts to limit Iranian influence in Baghdad. Maliki, nominated by Iraq’s main Shiite bloc last Saturday, previously served as prime minister from 2006 to 2014. While the U.S. supported him initially, his second term drew criticism for sectarian policies that contributed to the rise of the Islamic State. Trump took to Truth Social, stating that Maliki’s return would prevent Iraq from achieving “Success, Prosperity, or Freedom” without American support.  GUNMEN ABDUCT KWARA MONARCH, SON IN NEW YEAR’S EVE PALACE RAID

1st January, 2026

Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have abducted the monarch of Aafin Community, Oba S.Y. Olaonipekun, and one of his sons, Olaolu, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, during a late-night attack on the royal palace in Kwara State.

The incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2026, in Aafin Ile-Ere, Ile-Ire district of Ifelodun Local Government Area. Witnesses said the assailants stormed the palace, firing sporadically to cause panic before forcing their way inside.

During the attack, the Olori, Mrs. Felicia Olaonipekun, sustained a gunshot wound to the arm but escaped abduction. She was later rushed to a hospital, where she is receiving treatment.

An eyewitness told Benue Info-pedia that the attackers appeared to have deliberately targeted the palace, overpowering the community’s two-man night vigilante team. At the time of the raid, no fewer than 10 family members and visitors were said to be inside the palace.

The abduction has further heightened security concerns in Kwara South, coming just weeks after the Ojibara of Bayagan Ile, Oba Kamilu Salami, regained freedom following the payment of a hefty ransom by members of his community.

Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
