 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. NEW GOC 8 DIVISION VISITS TIDIBALE COMMUNITY, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY.(PHOTO).


 New GOC 8 Division visits Tidibale Community, reaffirms commitment to strengthen Security.


As part of his first official engagement, the new General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force Northwest Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna has carried out an assessment visit to Tidibale Community in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State.


The GOC reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and Security of the Community. 


General Bemgba emphasises that the visit of General Koughna is part of an initial assessment following the safe return of Tidibale’s Residents who were said to be threatened by Bandits.


A statement by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2 Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba,  underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting Communities and restoring normalcy, enabling Residents to resume their daily activities without fear.


The GOC hinted that Troops are now stationed in Tidibale to maintain a robust Security presence and remain vigilant, ready to respond swiftly to any threats or emergencies.


The GOC assured that no part of the Community would be left under the control of any Bandit groups.


Major General Koughna further called on Residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to Security Forces.


He stated that by working together, they can collectively strengthen peace and security in their Communities. 


A traditional Ruler in the Area, Alhaji Ibrahim on behalf of Tidibale Community,  expresses gratitude to the GOC for the timely visit, noting that the gesture has renewed their hope in the Nigerian Army’s efforts to secure the Community and help them return to their daily lives and  commitment to bringing lasting peace and stability to the Region.


Major General Koughna had earlier received a detailed operational briefing from the Commanding Officer  26 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Nasiru  Mustapha, upon arrival at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Isa. 


This provided critical insights into the current Security situation and ongoing operations in the Area.


The Nigerian Army remains resolute in its mission to protecting lives and property, collaborating closely with local Communities to achieve enduring peace and security in the Northwest Region.
