 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Onitsha South Mayor, Market Leaders Brainstorm On Way forward

The Mayor of Onitsha South Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Emeka Orji on January 22, met with the market leaders within the area to brainstorm on the way forward for the constituency.


The meeting which was the first interactive meeting of the year with the market leaders witnessed the budget planning if the year 2026 and other important issues that will be beneficiary for the people of the area.


Speaking immediately after the meeting at the Local Government Secretariat Hall, the Local Government Secretary, Paul Onuachalla Esq said, "We are planning  our budgets and we deemed it necessary to call the market leaders, stakeholders.


"We ensure that they are integral part of our decision making process because some of them have businesses here but reside outside the area, their input will help us to govern better.


"This is a political season, we also outlined the scorecards, the developmental strides of the Mayor, his interventions in something that could have result to major crisis, the provision and procurement of fire service station and fire truck.


On the fire service truck, Onuachalla said that Onitsha South did not have a limited human resources which made the LG to request the technical assistance from the Ministry of Power and Water Resources Awka for assistance.


"In technical assistance, I mean, we need fire service officers and technical officers, whatever that is required to make this machine effective, battle ready.


"We also invited the officials of the fire service officials from Awka for testing of the machine to get them battle ready because this is the first time Onitsha South is embarking on such project," Onuachalla said.
