AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Rep. Kalu Commissions 3km Inter-State Road Linking Abia, Ebonyi Communities.

Member of the House of Representatives for Bende Federal Constituency, Rep. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has commissioned a newly constructed 3-kilometre Alayi–Ugwueke–Akaeze Road, a key inter-state link connecting Ugwueke community in Abia State with Akaeze in Ebonyi State.

Kalu announced the commissioning in Ugwueke, describing the project as a historic milestone for the benefiting communities, as the road is being constructed for the first time. He said the intervention marked the end of decades of difficult travel conditions that had constrained movement, trade and social interaction within the area.

According to the lawmaker, residents of the Ugwueke Ezeukwu community had long endured poor access routes, which affected economic activities and limited inter-community engagement.

He noted that the completion and commissioning of the road would significantly improve connectivity between communities and states, ease transportation, stimulate local commerce and strengthen inter-state relations between Abia and Ebonyi.

Kalu stressed that constituency projects must be people-centred and responsive to the core needs of constituents. He said the road project reflected his commitment to fulfilling promises made to the people of Ugwueke and ensuring that democratic dividends are felt at the grassroots.

“I am glad to have once again fulfilled this promise to the good people of Ugwueke,” the lawmaker stated, adding that improved infrastructure remains critical to sustainable development and inclusive growth.

He further said that communities across Bende Federal Constituency are increasingly benefiting from development initiatives, noting that the impact of the APC-led government is being felt within the constituency and beyond.

Residents and community leaders were said to have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that the new road would boost economic opportunities, improve access to neighbouring towns and enhance overall quality of life in the area.
