Malian army withdraws from key Tessalit military camp: sources Mali’s army and its Russian mercenary allies have surrendered Camp Tessalit, a strategic military post in the north, multiple sources told the AFP news agency on Friday. An official from the Tuareg-led separatist group claimed soldiers and mercenaries at the camp had "surrendered", following a fierce fight over the weekend. Simultaneous attacks in Mali by militants linked to Al Qaeda and separatist Tuareg rebels on April 25 showed how fighters from different groups with different goals were able to strike at the heart of the West African country's military government. Gunfire and explosions were reported in the capital Bamako and around a large military base outside the capital, as well as Gao and central areas, as gunfire continuing in the northern city of Kidal. THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO NIGERIA, RICHARD MILLS, HAS EXITED THE COUNTRY FOLLOWING A DIRECTIVE BY US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP RECALLING AMERICAN ENVOYS.(PHOTO).

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has exited the country following a directive by US President Donald Trump recalling American envoys.

A photograph accompanying shows Ambassador Mills walking through a guard of honour formed by embassy staff and well-wishers, who applauded as he made his way out of the US Embassy premises in Abuja. Dressed in traditional Nigerian attire, Mills was flanked by colleagues and supporters, reflecting a warm and symbolic farewell that underscored his close engagement with Nigeria during his tenure.

The departure comes amid reports that Trump, who recently returned to office, ordered the recall of several US diplomatic representatives as part of a broader reshuffling of America’s foreign service and diplomatic strategy. While official details of the recall were yet to be fully outlined at the time of reporting, the move has already generated significant reactions within diplomatic and political circles in Nigeria.

Ambassador Mills served as the US envoy to Nigeria during a period marked by complex bilateral relations, including cooperation on security, democracy, economic development, and governance reforms. His tenure also coincided with critical moments in Nigeria’s political landscape, including general elections, security challenges, and debates around democratic freedoms.

Observers note that Mills was known for his active engagement with civil society, government officials, and youth groups, often emphasizing democratic values, accountability, and inclusive governance. His decision to wear Nigerian traditional attire during his exit was widely interpreted on social media as a gesture of respect and solidarity with the country.

As of the time of filing this report, the US Embassy in Abuja has not released an official statement detailing the implications of Mills’ departure or naming an interim or replacement envoy. Diplomatic analysts, however, expect that a chargé d’affaires will temporarily oversee embassy operations pending the appointment of a new ambassador.

The recall of US envoys and Ambassador Mills’ exit have sparked conversations online about the future direction of US–Nigeria relations under the new US administration, with many Nigerians expressing hope that diplomatic engagement between both countries will remain strong and mutually beneficial despite the leadership changes.
