US plans to build nuclear reactors on the Moon within next four years, Energy Department says

NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy plan to build and deploy nuclear reactors on the Moon within the next four years, officials announced Tuesday, marking a significant step in powering long-term lunar research and future missions to Mars. The agencies signed an agreement reaffirming their collaboration on developing nuclear fission surface power systems for use on the Moon.

The reactors would rely on uranium cores roughly the size of a paper towel roll, capable of generating enough electricity to power multiple homes continuously for at least a decade. NASA officials highlighted that such a system is particularly suited for lunar conditions, where nights last roughly 14 Earth days, making solar power unreliable. NASA’s Fission Surface Power Project concluded its initial design phase in 2024, and the goal is now to ready a reactor for launch within the next several years, advancing what the agency calls a “Golden Age of space exploration.”.
