Abia Community Leader Alleges Abduction, Torture by Councillor, Seeks Governor Otti’s Intervention Over Delayed Probe

A prominent community leader and former councillor from Ohafia Local Government Area in Abia State, Hon. Uduma Uguru, has petitioned Governor Alex Otti, calling for urgent intervention in what he describes as an unacceptable delay in the investigation into his alleged abduction, torture, and unlawful detention.

In a formal letter dated February 24, 2026, addressed to the governor at Government House, Umuahia, Uguru gave a detailed account of the incident, which he claims was carried out by Councillor Eke Daniel Urum and a group of youths from Amaekpu Ohafia. He further alleged that the operation had the backing or involvement of Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu.

The latest appeal follows an initial petition Uguru submitted on November 17, 2025. He commended Governor Otti for the prompt preliminary response, which reportedly led to his invitation by the Abia State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning. According to the petitioner, DSS operatives also took statements from his traditional ruler and other individuals named in the complaint.

Uguru said security personnel later accompanied him from Umuahia to Amaekpu Ohafia, where he identified what he described as a “torture chamber,” the location where he was allegedly held captive and subjected to inhumane treatment.

His legal representatives subsequently filed a comprehensive petition with the Assistant Inspector General of Police at Zone 9 Command Headquarters in Umuahia, outlining the alleged criminal conduct of the councillor and his associates. Despite these efforts, Uguru expressed serious concern that neither the DSS nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued any official communication regarding the progress of the investigation or taken steps toward prosecuting any suspects.

He warned that the continued lack of visible action is creating a widespread impression that certain individuals may be shielded from justice, a situation he said could seriously undermine public confidence in law enforcement agencies across Abia State.

The community leader emphasized the severity of the alleged offences, kidnapping, unlawful detention, extortion of ransom, and torture, all committed against a citizen within the state. He also drew attention to a video purportedly showing his torture, which he said has been circulating widely on social media platforms since November 2025. Uguru stated that the persistent sharing of the footage has caused him and his family considerable emotional distress, with his wife and children reportedly enduring repeated taunts and harassment as a result.

Reaffirming his trust in the state government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, Hon. Uduma Uguru appealed to Governor Otti to personally revisit the matter and ensure swift, transparent action that delivers justice and restores faith in the justice system.
