An unidentified attacker set off an explosive device beside a police patrol vehicle in Moscow shortly after midnight Tuesday, killing himself and one officer while injuring two others, authorities said. The blast occurred near Savyolovsky Train Station in the city’s downtown area. According to officials, the assailant approached a traffic police vehicle before detonating the device, causing an explosion that killed one officer at the scene and left two others wounded. The injured officers were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal investigation into the incident. Officials have not released the identity of the attacker or provided details about a possible motive. The explosion took place on the fourth anniversary of President Vladimir Putin’s decision to deploy Russian troops into Ukraine, a date that carries significant political weight inside the country.
