 Catholic priest reportedly klled in Kogi  A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro, has been reportedly killed by unknown assailants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State. According to reports, the priest was stabbed multiple times along Ajaokuta road on Wednesday, 29th July 2026. His body was found dumped at the roadside.  Rev. Fr. Oyetoro was born in Egbe, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State and a native of Ayetoro in Ijumu Local Government Area.  Until his death, he served as a priest at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Egbe. Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clinched victory in the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election, defeating All Progressives Congress (APC) contender Yahaya Shehu in a closely watched race during the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) local government polls.


According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kasim secured 22,165 votes, while Shehu trailed with 17,788 votes. Other contenders included the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 432 votes, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at 175, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 158 votes. Minor parties recorded lower tallies, with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) receiving the smallest count of 24 votes.


INEC Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, described the election as peaceful and orderly, noting smooth voting and collation across the council area.


The PDP’s win in Gwagwalada is particularly notable amid ongoing national turbulence within the party, marked by leadership rifts, defections to the APC, and the departure of prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).


Political analysts suggest the outcome is significant given Gwagwalada’s ethnically and religiously diverse population, often seen as a mirror of Nigeria’s broader social fabric.
