 NDLEA dismantles Abuja drug bunks, arrests 132, recovers 220kg illicit substances  -Marwa hails operation, vows to sustain crackdown in FCT, other states  In a non-stop two-week offensive action against traffickers and dealers, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully dismantled several drug joints and bunks within and around the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja where a total of 132 suspects were arrested and 220 kilograms of assorted illicit substances recovered. The wel-coordinated raids jointly conducted by the Agency's Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) and the FCT Strategic Command from llth to 25th April 2026 were launched to dismantle illicit drug hubs contributing to substance abuse, trafficking, and associated criminal activities in the capital city after weeks of intelligence and surveillance across all identified hotspots. Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clinched victory in the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election, defeating All Progressives Congress (APC) contender Yahaya Shehu in a closely watched race during the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) local government polls.


According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kasim secured 22,165 votes, while Shehu trailed with 17,788 votes. Other contenders included the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 432 votes, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at 175, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 158 votes. Minor parties recorded lower tallies, with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) receiving the smallest count of 24 votes.


INEC Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, described the election as peaceful and orderly, noting smooth voting and collation across the council area.


The PDP’s win in Gwagwalada is particularly notable amid ongoing national turbulence within the party, marked by leadership rifts, defections to the APC, and the departure of prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).


Political analysts suggest the outcome is significant given Gwagwalada’s ethnically and religiously diverse population, often seen as a mirror of Nigeria’s broader social fabric.
