 Dolly Parton returns to public eye to celebrate opening day at Dollywood     Dolly Parton made her first public appearance in months to celebrate the opening day of Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on Friday. The country music icon reflected on the past year, a year after the death of her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean, saying she is “doing good” and has been working to rebuild herself spiritually, emotionally, and physically after grieving and dealing with health issues that kept her from touring. Joined on stage by Dollywood president Eugene Naughton, Parton brought her trademark humor to the crowd, joking about rumors of a new husband while reaffirming her devotion to Dean. Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clinched victory in the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election, defeating All Progressives Congress (APC) contender Yahaya Shehu in a closely watched race during the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) local government polls.


According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kasim secured 22,165 votes, while Shehu trailed with 17,788 votes. Other contenders included the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 432 votes, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at 175, and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 158 votes. Minor parties recorded lower tallies, with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) receiving the smallest count of 24 votes.


INEC Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, described the election as peaceful and orderly, noting smooth voting and collation across the council area.


The PDP’s win in Gwagwalada is particularly notable amid ongoing national turbulence within the party, marked by leadership rifts, defections to the APC, and the departure of prominent figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).


Political analysts suggest the outcome is significant given Gwagwalada’s ethnically and religiously diverse population, often seen as a mirror of Nigeria’s broader social fabric.
