HEFAMAA RALLIES COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO CURB MEDICAL QUACKERY IN EPE

The Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has intensified efforts to eliminate medical quackery by calling on residents of Epe to take an active role in safeguarding healthcare standards within their communities.

At a stakeholders’ sensitisation forum held in the area, the agency emphasised that the fight against illegal and unprofessional health practices cannot be won by regulators alone but requires strong collaboration with community members.

The Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. Abiola Idowu, who was represented by the Director of Monitoring and Inspection, Dr. Olayinka Daniel, said the engagement was part one of the strategies by the agency to bring regulatory activities closer to the grassroots.

She explained that while the agency routinely conducts monitoring, inspection and accreditation of health facilities across the state, public participation remains crucial in identifying unregistered operators and discouraging patronage of substandard establishments.

According to her, quackery poses serious risks to public health, often leading to avoidable complications and loss of lives. She stressed that residents must remain vigilant and report suspicious facilities operating within their neighbourhoods.

To strengthen transparency and public confidence, Dr. Idowu also showcased newly introduced compliance tools, including a QR code verification system and an official accreditation logo displayed by approved facilities.

The QR code, she explained, enables residents to confirm the registration status of any health facility in real time, empowering them to make informed healthcare choices.

Dr. Idowu reiterated that only duly accredited facilities are permitted to operate in the state, warning that patronising unregistered providers exposes individuals and families to significant health dangers.

In his remarks, the Vice Chairman of Epe Local Government, Sikiru Owolomose, commended the agency for engaging directly with the people.

He assured that the local council would continue to collaborate with HEFAMAA to enhance awareness and strengthen monitoring efforts at the community level.

It should be noted that the sensitisation by HEFAMAA is scheduled to reach all local government councils in the State, being a statewide advocacy aimed at promoting safe, ethical and professional healthcare delivery, particularly as the agency reinforces its zero-tolerance stance against medical quackery and regulatory violations.
