India deports 2,356 Nigerians in five years — report

India has deported over 2,356 Nigerians in the past five years, with a significant surge in deportations observed between 2023 and 2024. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Nigerians accounted for 63% of all foreign nationals deported from India during this period. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year alone, 1470 Nigerians were deported, averaging four individuals per day. The majority of deportations were linked to expired visas and drug-related offenses. The trend highlights a growing concern, with Nigerians topping India's deportation list since 2017.

Bangladesh and Uganda followed, with 411 and 78 deportations, respectively, in the same period. Most deported Nigerians initially entered India on student visas, which later expired. Despite improving diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and India, deportations may increase with the passage of the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, aimed at modernizing immigration policies 12. India has seen significant foreign visitor numbers, with over 9.8 million visitors between April 2023 and March 2024.

Meanwhile, an estimated 60,000 Nigerians reside and work in India, forming the largest West African community.
