NAF SUPER PUMA RETURNS TO SERVICE AS CAS CHARGES PERSONNEL TO BOOST OPERATIONAL READINESS

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recorded a major operational boost on 4 February 2026 with the commissioning of the reactivated Super Puma helicopter (NAF 565) at 205 Rotary Wing, Ikeja, Lagos, as the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the Service’s determination to sustain decisive airpower in defence of the nation. Describing the event as a symbol of renewed capability, the CAS stated, “This occasion is not merely about the return of an aircraft to our fleet, but a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to enhance and sustain a highly motivated, professional, and mission-ready force.” He emphasized that restoring legacy platforms remains central to strengthening national security and ensuring the Air Force maintains operational superiority across theatres.

Air Marshal Aneke, expressed deep appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda is translating into tangible capability gains through strategic acquisitions and restoration of critical assets. Highlighting the aircraft’s value, he described the Super Puma as indispensable to NAF operations. “The Super Puma is a workhorse whose role is second to none in the Nigerian Air Force,” he said, stressing its importance in troop transport, casualty evacuation, search and rescue, and logistics support, as well as its proven effectiveness in Operation Hadin Kai and other joint missions nationwide.

Commending the consultant, retired Air Commodore TA Badru, the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, and technicians of 205 Rotary Wing for their professionalism, the CAS charged personnel to uphold strict safety and maintenance standards. “Let it reflect our strong culture of airmanship, maintenance and pride,” he urged, linking discipline directly to mission readiness. During a durbar with personnel at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base, he highlighted improved operational tempo and revealed that the NAF is fast-tracking induction of advanced platforms, assuring airmen that “these state-of-the-art platforms will provide us with unprecedented precision strike capabilities and regional deterrence.” Reaffirming his welfare-driven approach under the principle of “Welfare for Enhanced Warfare,” the CAS pledged continued improvements in accommodation, allowances, and medical support, urging personnel to remain disciplined and mission-focused as operations intensify nationwide.
