Nick Reiner pleads not guilty to parents’ murder charges

Over two months after the stabbing deaths of Rob and Michelle Reiner, their youngest son, Nick Reiner, entered a not guilty plea Monday to two counts of first-degree murder. Facing either life in prison or the death penalty under “special circumstances” charges, Reiner appeared in Los Angeles County Superior Court before Judge Theresa McGonigle. Wearing a jumpsuit and with his head shaved, he spoke only to acknowledge his next court date of April 29. Bail was again denied during the brief hearing, which lasted less than 10 minutes.

The 32-year-old, who has a history of addiction and mental health struggles, was arrested hours after his parents’ bodies were found in their West LA home on December 14. Represented by the Public Defenders’ Office after his private attorney withdrew in January, this marked Reiner’s third court appearance since the tragedy. The courtroom at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center was filled with media, onlookers, prosecutors, and defense representatives, while crowds of journalists gathered outside. Rob and Michelle Reiner were found dead from multiple sharp force injuries on the first night of Hanukkah last year, just hours before they were scheduled to have dinner with Barack and Michelle Obama. Prosecutors have indicated they will consult with the family regarding the potential pursuit of the death penalty, though family members have reportedly expressed that they do not want that path taken against Nick.
