Nigerian Senate to Reconvene Plenary Session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 Despite Scheduled Two-week Break

The Nigerian Senate will resume its plenary session on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Senate Chamber, following a two-week recess.

This was announced in an official statement released on Sunday by Mr. Emmanuel Odo, the Clerk of the Senate. Odo stated that he was acting on direct instructions from Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON.

In the notice, Odo quoted the Senate President's directive: “I am directed by His Excellency, The President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, to inform all distinguished Senators that the Senate will reconvene plenary session as follows; Date: Tuesday, 17th February, 2026.”

He further emphasized the importance of full attendance, urging lawmakers to adjust their schedules: “Consequently, all distinguished Senators are kindly requested to note and reschedule their engagements accordingly to enable them to attend, as very crucial decisions will be taken on national issues during the session.”

The reconvening comes after a scheduled two-week break, during which senators focused on budget defence sessions involving various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The session is described as critical, with expectations that lawmakers will address pressing national matters. Recent reports indicate that the National Assembly's resumption aligns with ongoing discussions around electoral reforms, including potential considerations related to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill and responses to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) 2027 general election timetable announcement.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives are set to hold sessions on the same day, highlighting the urgency of the legislative agenda ahead of key national decisions.
