 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  POLICE BEGIN PROBE INTO ALLEGED SHOOTING OF STUDENT IN OSOGBO.


The Osun State Police Command says it has commenced investigation into the alleged shooting and reckless pursuit of a student and his family in Osogbo, the state capital. 


A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, indicates that the investigation is coming after the Command's attention was drawn to a viral video and a press statement released by the Assistant General Secretary of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, dated February over the alleged incident.


The  Police spokesman explained that preliminary findings were being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts, concerning the incident reported to have occurred around Itaolokan Junction to Oke Ayepe area of Osogbo. 


It added that the Commissioner of Police, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers have visited the victims at the hospital noting that they were responding to treatment, while the Command had undertaken to offset their medical bills.


The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed that officers suspected to be involved are currently under investigation and that any unauthorized or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, would not be condoned.


The Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism urging members of the public with verifiable information or video evidence to assist the investigation. 


It also appealed to student bodies and other stakeholders to remain calm and allow due process to take its course, assuring that justice would be served based on facts and evidence.
