U.S-Iran nuclear talks set for Friday if Iran submits proposal

U.S. negotiators are preparing for another round of talks with Iran in Geneva on Friday if Tehran submits a detailed nuclear proposal within the next 48 hours, according to senior U.S. officials.

The discussions are seen as potentially the last diplomatic window before President Trump could authorize a major U.S.-Israeli military operation targeting Iran, including its Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, both of whom have urged Trump to pursue diplomacy before taking military action, are expected in Geneva on Feb. 27 if Iran submits its proposal early this week.

“If Iran provides a draft proposal, the U.S. is ready to meet in Geneva on Friday to begin detailed negotiations and explore the possibility of a nuclear deal,” a senior U.S. official said. Officials also confirmed that the talks may include discussions of an interim agreement before a full deal is reached.

During the last round of talks in Geneva, Witkoff and Kushner requested a detailed written proposal from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing Trump’s position of “zero enrichment” of uranium on Iranian soil. At the same time, they indicated the U.S. could consider a proposal allowing limited “token enrichment” if it prevents any path to a nuclear weapon. Araghchi said he plans to complete the draft over the weekend and will submit it once approved by Tehran’s political leadership.

Some U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Lindsey Graham, have criticized advisers who counsel patience, urging Trump to take military action against Iran. Officials note, however, that while the president could order a strike at any time, many on his team continue to advocate for giving diplomacy a chance.
