14 confirmed dead in South Korean auto parts plant fire

South Korean rescue teams recovered the bodies of 14 people from the wreckage of an auto parts factory in Daejeon on Saturday, following a Friday explosion and fire that injured at least 59 others. Fire officials reported that 25 of the injured were seriously hurt, though it was not immediately clear if any were in critical condition. More than 500 emergency personnel, including firefighters and police, were involved in containing the blaze and carrying out rescue operations.

Thick gray smoke was seen rising from the Anjun Industrial facility, with some workers reportedly jumping from the building to escape. The factory building was heavily damaged and initially deemed too dangerous to enter. Unmanned firefighting robots were used to cool the structure before search teams entered. Nine of the victims were found in a third-floor gym, and three others near a second-floor water tank. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited the site, meeting with victims’ families and urging additional safety precautions. Firefighters also recovered more than 100 kilograms of highly reactive chemicals from the site, while 28 people remained hospitalized, including four who underwent surgery for injuries sustained during the fire.
