Samson Adamu makes history as first Nigerian appointed Acting Secretary General of Confederation of African Football

History was made in African football administration on Sunday as Nigerian football official Samson Adamu was appointed Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to occupy the influential position in the organisation’s 70-year history.

Adamu’s elevation marks a significant milestone not only for Nigeria but for West African representation in the upper echelons of continental football governance.

His appointment comes following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba, the Swiss-Congolese administrator who stepped down earlier on the same day.

Prior to his new role, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a key role in the successful organisation of several major competitions across the continent.

His experience and familiarity with CAF’s operational structure are expected to ensure continuity within the organisation during this transitional period.

The decision to appoint Adamu was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and subsequently ratified by the Congress during its meeting held at the Giza Palace Hotel in Cairo on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

Adamu’s appointment has already been hailed as a proud moment for Nigerian football stakeholders, with prominent figures such as Amaju Pinnick and Ibrahim Musa Gusau present in Cairo to witness the historic development.

As he steps into the role, expectations will be high for Adamu to build on CAF’s recent reforms and continue driving the growth and global competitiveness of African football.
