Abia State to Establish Safety Commission for Homes, Offices, Markets and Industries – Governor Otti

Abia State Governor Dr Alex Otti has announced that his administration will establish the Abia State Safety Commission to enforce and regulate safety standards across homes, offices, markets and industrial premises throughout the state.

The governor disclosed this on Friday when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, led by its Chairman, Hon. David Idris Zakarias.

Governor Otti revealed that the proposal to set up the commission had already received approval from the State Executive Council and is now awaiting legislative action by the Abia State House of Assembly for enactment and full implementation.

He emphasised that creating the commission would not be enough without continuous public education and reorientation to build safety consciousness among residents. Such efforts, he said, are vital to prevent avoidable disasters and protect lives and property.

“In some markets, you see dark-line electrical wires and combustible materials kept unsafely. We must continue to educate our people and ensure fire extinguishers are available,” Governor Otti stated.

The governor pledged that his administration would ensure the safety policy initiative is properly legislated and effectively executed.

Earlier, the committee chairman, Hon. David Idris Zakarias, noted that Lagos State is currently the only state in Nigeria with an operational Safety Commission. He expressed regret that widespread non-compliance with safety standards continues to claim lives and destroy businesses across the country.
