ACTDA Demolishes Encroaching Structures for Road Expansion in Okpuno

By Ukpa Ewa

The Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) has commenced the demolition of fences and other structures encroaching on Ikenga Umuawulu Street, Okpuno, near Mable Arc Hotel, as part of efforts to expand and upgrade road infrastructure within the Awka Capital Territory.

Speaking during the demolition exercise in Awka, the Head of Enforcement Unit , ACTDA Mr. Ukachukwu Okonkwo, said the road, which links the Pinnacle area to Abakaliki Street, is an existing interconnecting route that has served residents for many years.

According to him, the expansion is aimed at improving traffic movement within the capital centre and aligning the road with approved urban development standards.

He explained that affected property owners had previously been warned against building beyond the approved setback but failed to comply, necessitating the removal of structures obstructing the approved road alignment.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that development within the capital territory conforms to laid down standards. The road design includes shoulders and walkways, which must be accommodated,” he stated.

Okonkwo said that the road measures approximately 8.4 metres in width and will feature asphalt surfacing, stone based construction and a functional drainage system to control erosion.

Engineers on site confirmed that grading of the road and construction of drainage channels are currently ongoing as part of the foundation phase of the project. They explained that the work will involve excavation to a depth of 40 centimetres below asphalt level before final surfacing with asphalt to ensure durability and structural stability.

Speaking on the level of compliance, the project Surveyor, Mr. Ezeugo Christopher said residents had largely cooperated with authorities during the exercise.

Some residents also expressed support for the development. Chibuike Nwoye noted that the road was previously in poor condition, especially during the rainy season, leading to erosion challenges.

Another resident, Chidiebele Ebuka, described the execution process as orderly and urged authorities to ensure fairness in carrying out the demolition across affected areas.

Also, Emmanuel Okafor who resides in the area described the project as a welcome development and expressed optimism that the completed road would significantly improve accessibility and movement.

The project forms part of the ongoing infrastructure development drive of the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
