Nicholas Brendon, best known for playing Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was found passed at the age of 54, according to authorities.
Putnam County Coroner Todd Zeiner confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE that Brendon was discovered on March 20. “He was positioned as if asleep,” Zeiner said. TMZ first reported the news.
The coroner explained that Brendon lived alone, and it was a longtime friend who had been staying overnight to provide care who found him.
“Evidence indicated the time of death was very recent. Investigators are reviewing recently posted videos as potential evidence of prior illness,” Zeiner added.
Brendon’s family confirmed his p@ssing on Instagram the same day. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the post read.
In the statement, they described him as “passionate, sensitive and endlessly driven to create.” The family reflected on his art, saying it was “one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
They also acknowledged his struggles, noting he was receiving treatment and optimistic about the future.
“Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination and heart,” the post said.
Brendon earned fame for his role as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, appearing alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and David Boreanaz, over seven seasons from 1997 to 2003.
