Categorically False -Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Dispute Claims Netflix Was Blindsided by Oprah Interview and Spare

Fresh questions about the working relationship between Meghan Markle, Prince Harry and Netflix are being met with firm denials from the couple’s camp.

A report published on March 17 by Variety takes a closer look at their production deal, tracing developments since the agreement was signed in 2020 after their move to California.

Central to that partnership was the docuseries Harry & Meghan, which followed their relationship and decision to step away from royal duties.

The report suggests there were moments of tension during production, including changes behind the scenes before director Liz Garbus took over the project. It also raises concerns from unnamed sources about how certain external projects were handled.

One of the key points involves the couple’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. According to the report, Netflix was not fully informed ahead of its release.

That claim has been strongly rejected. A spokesperson for the couple described it as “categorically false,” insisting the streamer was aware of the interview.

Questions were also raised about the timing of Harry’s memoir, Spare. The report claims some at Netflix felt caught off guard when the book was announced.

Again, representatives for the couple disagreed, saying there had been prior communication and coordination around both the book and the docuseries.

Sources familiar with the arrangement added that the original deal allowed for separate publishing and podcast projects outside the Netflix partnership.

The report further points to discussions during post-production of Harry & Meghan, suggesting that Meghan requested certain edits out of concern for how some content might affect members of the royal family following the d!ath of Queen Elizabeth II.

While interpretations of that request vary in the report, a Netflix spokesperson said the characterisation presented was “not accurate.”

Amid the ongoing conversation, a separate development has been confirmed. Meghan’s lifestyle brand, As Ever, is no longer tied to Netflix and will now operate independently.

A spokesperson for the brand described the split as a natural step following its initial growth, adding that the focus now is on building and expanding the business.

For now, both sides continue to present different versions of how the partnership has evolved, with the couple maintaining that communication has been consistent throughout.
