Charles Oliveira claims BMF title from Max Holloway at UFC 326, almost 11 years after their first fight

Charles Oliveira finally got the win he’s been chasing for nearly 11 years, unanimously defeating Max Holloway on Saturday night to claim the BMF title.

All five judges scored the bout 50-45 in favor of Oliveira (37-11), as the third-ranked lightweight controlled the fight from the opening bell. Holloway (27-9), who was the -235 favorite, had previously beaten Oliveira in August 2015 after Oliveira suffered an esophageal injury in the first two minutes of their fight.

Holloway, 34, struggled to find his rhythm against Oliveira’s relentless attack, which combined precise strikes and dominant ground control. Despite the dominance, Oliveira paid respect to Holloway in the post-fight interview. “Max is the toughest guy I’ve ever fought against,” Oliveira said, holding his son while his wife stood beside him. “I had to come here and dominate.”

Oliveira wasted no time, taking the fight to Holloway within 30 seconds, securing top control and attempting a rear-naked choke in the first round. The next three rounds followed a similar pattern, with Oliveira dictating the pace on the ground while Holloway absorbed strikes and repeatedly defended against submission attempts.

In the fifth round, the fighters exchanged moments on the feet before ending up on the ground, with Oliveira in Holloway’s guard for the final stretch. While some fans booed the slower pace, Oliveira praised Holloway’s toughness and professionalism: “If this division has two BMFs, those BMFs are Charles Oliveira and Max Holloway.”

The BMF belt, introduced by the UFC in November 2019, isn’t tied to a weight class but represents the fighter who embodies ferocity and grit in the sport.

On the co-main event, seventh-ranked Caio Borralho (18-2) defeated No. 8 Reinier de Ridder (21-4) by unanimous decision, 30-27, after surviving an early knee to the groin and staying mostly upright to outfight his opponent.

Other notable undercard results included unranked Raul Rosas Jr. (12-1) outpointing 13th-ranked Rob Font (22-10) with a 30-27 unanimous decision, Drew Dober (29-15) knocking out Michael Johnson (25-20) with consecutive left hands in the second round, and 13th-ranked middleweight Gregory Rodrigues (19-6) scoring a first-round knockout of No. 15 Brunno Ferreira (15-3) with a perfectly timed counter right at 1:47 of their bout.
