DENTAL AND MEDICAL PRACTITIONER PANEL SUSPENDS MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF EURACARE HOSPITAL AND TWO OTHERS, OVER THE DEATH OF CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE'S SON. (PHOTO).

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended the Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, and two other doctors over the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The panel invoked its order of suspension after establishing a prima facie case of medical negligence in the management of the toddler, who died on January 7, 2026, following medical care in Lagos.

Also suspended from medical practice in Nigeria are the anesthesiologist at Euracare, Dr. Titus Ogundare, and the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh. The trio will remain barred from practising pending the determination of their case by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

In a statement signed by the Secretary of the panel, Dr. Enejo Abdu, the body disclosed that beyond the three suspensions, it found a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 other doctors. Those affected are Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr. Raji Faidat.

According to the statement, the panel cleared eight other doctors after reviewing complaints against all 21 practitioners involved in the case. The panel examined counter-affidavits and heard oral depositions on oath before reaching its conclusions.

The investigation was concluded during the panel’s 25th session held at Excel Hotel & Resort in Abuja on February 17 and 18, 2026.

In a legal notice dated January 10, 2026, issued by the law firm led by Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct, accusing Euracare and the attending medical personnel of breaching the duty of care owed to their son.

With the suspension now in effect, the affected doctors are to face further proceedings before the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, which will determine their culpability and any additional sanctions.
