French authorities have arrested two additional suspects in connection with a foiled attack on Bank of America’s Paris offices, the country’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said Sunday. The custody of the first suspect, a minor arrested on Saturday, has been extended as the investigation continues.
The investigation, opened on March 28, targets attempted destruction by fire or other dangerous means, as well as the manufacture, possession, and transport of explosive or incendiary devices. Police intervened early Saturday in Paris’ 8th arrondissement after a patrol noticed two individuals placing and attempting to ignite an improvised explosive device outside the bank. One suspect was arrested at the scene while the other fled. Authorities said the rudimentary device could have been lethal and that the suspects appeared to be acting as paid intermediaries. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez indicated suspicions of Iranian involvement but stressed that no conclusion has been reached. The probe is being handled by the Paris police judicial unit and France’s domestic intelligence agency, with authorities noting similarities to attacks in the Netherlands, Belgium, Britain, and Norway targeting U.S.-linked sites.
