Howie Mandel criticizes Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos in awkward live exchange

Howie Mandel created an unexpected moment on Live with Kelly and Mark when a casual birthday remark turned into a tense exchange.

The 70-year-old comedian was congratulated by Mark Consuelos and complimented by Kelly Ripa for looking youthful, but Mandel pushed back, saying he didn’t appreciate what he felt was a backhanded compliment.

He explained that telling someone they look “great” at his age felt like a caveat rather than genuine praise.

The exchange briefly quieted the studio as the hosts clarified their intent, insisting the compliment was sincere.

Mandel, however, doubled down, comparing it to telling someone they’re “smart for a stupid person,” a quip that drew surprised laughter from the audience.

He then shifted the mood by joking, “I’ll be serious for a minute. I’m gorgeous!” which brought applause and helped reset the energy of the segment.

Once the tension eased, Mandel leaned into humor and shared details about his fitness routine, adding comedic flair to the conversation.

His quick wit and self-deprecating style brought the interview back to the lighthearted tone typical of daytime television, turning what began as an awkward moment into an entertaining highlight.
