It was very uncomfortable; Oprah Winfrey's ex-boyfriend reveals what it was like dating her

John Tesh recently looked back on his brief romance with Oprah Winfrey in the 1970s, when both were young TV reporters in Nashville.

At the time, they worked for competing stations, and their relationship drew attention due to the social climate in the South.

Tesh recalled that being an interracial couple was “very uncomfortable back then,” but said they didn’t let public scrutiny define their time together.

Because of their demanding schedules, the pair only saw each other about once a week, often joking privately about the stares they received in restaurants.

Tesh remembered how much fun it was when they were assigned to cover the same stories, noting that even then it was clear Winfrey was destined for greatness.

He described her as “something special” and said their relationship was more about companionship than public perception.

As their careers advanced, the romance naturally ended. Winfrey moved on to Baltimore and later Chicago, where she built her media empire, while Tesh pursued opportunities in New York and Los Angeles, eventually co‑hosting Entertainment Tonight and later focusing on music.

Both found lasting love elsewhere Tesh married Connie Sellecca in 1992, and Winfrey has been with Stedman Graham since 1986.

Decades later, Tesh’s reflections highlight a little‑known chapter in Oprah’s life, shaped by ambition, young love, and resilience in the face of social pressures.
