It’s El-Rufai Today, It Could Be You Tomorrow - ADC Tells Nigerians

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as a serious violation of his fundamental human rights.

The party also threatened to petition Amnesty International and other rights groups over the matter.

El-Rufai, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a member of the ADC, has reportedly been held in custody for over 30 days.

In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC labeled the detention as illegal and unconstitutional. The party alleged that there were attempts to pressure El-Rufai into abandoning his political affiliations and urged the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to respect the rule of law by either releasing him or allowing him to defend himself in court.

The ADC warned that prolonged detention without charge reflects authoritarian tendencies and has no place in a democratic system. It further stated that the situation undermines Nigeria’s democratic values and risks eroding public trust in governance.

According to the party, El-Rufai initially honored an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) but was later rearrested by the ICPC. More than a month later, he remains in custody without formal charges or arraignment.

The ADC also claimed he has faced restrictions on access to family and medical care, along with pressure to give up his political rights.

The party accused the government of using state institutions to suppress political opposition, insisting that fundamental rights such as liberty, fair hearing, and political participation must be upheld.

Calling on President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate commitment to the rule of law, the ADC demanded El-Rufai’s immediate release or prompt arraignment in a competent court.

It also urged Nigerians to defend democratic principles, warning that such actions could set a dangerous precedent.

The party concluded by stating that failure to uphold constitutional rights could signal a shift away from democratic governance.
