James Tolkan, Back to the Future and Top Gun actor, dies at 94

James Tolkan, the veteran actor famed for his role as the strict school vice principal Gerald Strickland in the Back to the Future series, has died at the age of 94.

Tolkan passed away on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York. A spokesperson confirmed his death on Friday, though no cause was immediately reported. He became widely recognized for portraying the stern principal who calls Marty McFly and his father “slackers,” a role he reprised throughout the trilogy, including portraying Strickland’s ancestors in the third film.

In addition to Back to the Future, Tolkan appeared as naval commander Stinger in the 1980s blockbuster Top Gun. His career spanned decades, with credits including WarGames and Dick Tracy, and he continued acting in films and television through 2011.

Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces in Des Moines, Iowa. His obituary encourages donations in his memory to local animal shelters, rescue organizations, or Humane Society chapters.
