 KASUPDA Residents Appeal Against ₦2.5 Million Community Payment For Old Transformer Repair, Call For Assistance

Residents and small business owners along Gwari Road by Kasupda have issued an urgent appeal to authorities over the recent demand that the community raise ₦2.5 million for the repair of a faulty electricity transformer.

In a letter signed by community representative Rita Mobi, residents highlighted the prolonged power challenges affecting the area due to the outdated and unreliable transformer. 

The community expressed concern that the financial demand is an unbearable burden on residents, most of whom are low-income earners and operate small-scale businesses struggling to survive amid economic hardships.

"Our area has been experiencing prolonged power challenges due to a faulty and outdated transformer. We were recently informed that the community is expected to raise the sum of ₦2.5 million for the repair of this old transformer. This demand has placed an unbearable burden on our people, most of whom are low-income earners and struggling small business owners. Our community is largely made up of less privileged residents who depend on small-scale businesses for survival. Many are already facing serious financial hardship due to inconsistent electricity supply. Expecting such a community to raise ₦2.5 million for the repair of an old and unreliable transformer is unrealistic and deeply distressing. Furthermore, repairing an old transformer does not guarantee a long-term solution, as it remains overloaded and prone to frequent breakdowns", the letter states. 

The appeal emphasized that the majority of the community depends on small businesses for survival and that inconsistent electricity supply has already worsened financial difficulties for many households.

Residents also stressed that repairing the old transformer would not provide a lasting solution, as the equipment remains overloaded and prone to frequent breakdowns.

They argued that installing a new transformer would be a more sustainable and cost-effective approach, ensuring stable electricity supply and preventing repeated financial demands from the community.

The letter calls on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently, either by providing a new transformer or by covering the repair costs, rather than placing the heavy financial burden on residents. 

The community further highlighted that access to reliable electricity would not only revive small businesses but also reduce poverty and improve the overall well-being of residents.

The residents concluded by pledging their cooperation within their limited means but stressed the need for prompt and compassionate action to resolve the ongoing electricity challenges.
