 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8. MAN ARRESTED IN NIGER STATE FOR SHOUTING “NO WATER, NO LIGHT” DURING GOVERNOR BAGO’S SALLAH VISIT. (PHOTO).

 The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old electrician, Hamisu Abdullahi, for allegedly shouting “no water, no light” during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s visit to the Emir of Suleja shortly after Eid-el-Fitr prayers on Friday.


According to police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun, the suspect was detained on March 20, 2026, for suspected thuggery and attempting to disrupt government activities at the emir’s palace in Suleja. He was subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna.


Abiodun told journalists that Abdullahi was later granted bail while investigations continue.


The suspect’s brother, Haruna Abdullahi, confirmed that Hamisu — a father of four residing in Unguwan Bayi, Suleja — was released on bail on Tuesday evening after spending five days in detention.


Eyewitness accounts indicated that Abdullahi shouted the phrase expressing frustration over the lack of basic amenities while the governor was at the palace. Unverified claims suggested the arrest was carried out on the direct orders of Governor Bago, though the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, said he was not aware of the incident when contacted.


The development has sparked concerns about freedom of expression in the state.


In a related development, the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria on Monday urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution Governor Bago against actions that could impede press freedom.


In a statement jointly signed by its Deputy President Fidelis Mbah and Legal Adviser Tobi Soniyi, the organisation said certain actions by the governor and some officials under him have infringed on the rights of journalists and media organisations to carry out their duties.
