 MARK, AMAECHI STORM KANO AS KWANKWASO FINALISES DEFECTION TO ADC


A major political realignment is unfolding in Kano as top figures of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) arrived in the state ahead of the expected defection of former Kano Governor and 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.


The high-powered delegation, which landed on Monday, signals growing momentum within the ADC as it positions itself for future electoral battles. Leading the team is the party’s National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark, alongside ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

Others in the delegation include Senator Dino Melaye and former APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun. They were received at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.


Kwankwaso is expected to formally join the ADC alongside key political allies, including Gwarzo, Senator Rufa’i Hanga (Kano Central), and Kano NNPP Chairman, Hashim Dungurawa.

The move comes barely 24 hours after Kwankwaso officially resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), confirming mounting speculation about his next political step.


In a statement released on Sunday, the former governor announced his immediate exit from the party, citing the need for a strategic political shift.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect,” Kwankwaso declared.


Kwankwaso described the decision as difficult, given his long-standing ties to the party. However, he stressed that evolving political realities made the move necessary.


“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another platform that offers the best opportunity to effect change,” he said.

His exit marks a significant blow to the NNPP, where he was not only a leading figure but also its 2023 presidential flagbearer.


The presence of political heavyweights in Kano underscores the ADC’s broader strategy to build a formidable coalition ahead of future elections.

Analysts say Kwankwaso’s entry could reshape political calculations, especially in the North, where his Kwankwasiyya Movement commands a strong grassroots following.


Kwankwaso also used the opportunity to thank the NNPP leadership, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, and party supporters for their loyalty.


“We shall continue to collaborate towards a better and more prosperous future for our nation,” he added.


With key political actors aligning under the ADC, the coming days could redefine alliances across Nigeria’s political landscape. For Kano and potentially the wider northern region this move may trigger a fresh wave of defections and strategic repositioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity.
