NYSC DG Reaffirms Comprehensive Insurance Coverage for Corps Members, Cautions Against Unverified Reports

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has reiterated that all corps members are fully covered by a comprehensive insurance package throughout their mandatory one-year national service.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Malam Jibrin Ndace, Nafiu emphasized that the welfare package includes both life insurance and medical care, designed to guarantee corps members a safe and fulfilling service year.

He disclosed that the Federal Government has instituted robust measures to protect corps members, including intervention in medical emergencies not fully covered by standard health insurance.

The NYSC boss cited specific instances of the scheme’s support, revealing that ₦28 million was disbursed to save the life of a pregnant corps member and her unborn child following a severe spinal cord injury sustained in a road accident. In another case, the scheme provided ₦33 million to procure prosthetic arms for a corps member who lost both arms in a road crash while en route to his place of primary assignment.

“Since 2004, every Corps Member has been covered by comprehensive insurance, including health and life insurance. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) caters for Corps Members whenever they fall ill,” Nafiu stated.

He further clarified that coverage begins from the issuance of call-up letters, before corps members even depart from their family homes, ensuring protection from the outset of their service journey.

The Director-General urged media practitioners to verify information with official NYSC channels before publication, warning against the circulation of unverified or misleading reports about the scheme.

Nafiu also defended the NYSC’s posting policy, explaining that deployments are strategically aligned with national development priorities to ensure equitable distribution of corps members across all states, with particular impact in critical sectors such as healthcare and education.

He highlighted the corps members’ valued contributions to national exercises, including elections, public sensitisation campaigns, and census operations, which have earned widespread commendation both within Nigeria and internationally.
